Macbeth Leila and Ben - a Bloody History

A Tunisian Macbeth where Shakespeare’s malevolent tyrant and his wife are reincarnated as the equally diabolical modern-day duo, Leïla and Zine Ben Ali .

Combining Shakespeare’s text with film and reportage, this production interrogates the way Arab leaders use, possess and perpetuate power.

Shakespeare’s vision of evil and driving ambition finds new resonance amidst a mafia-like culture.

Also playing as part of LIFT 2012 at the Riverside Studios.

A Tunisian Macbeth where Shakespeare’s malevolent tyrant and his wife are reincarnated as the equally diabolical, yet pathetically fallible modern-day duo, Leïla and Zine Ben Ali .

Combining Shakespeare’s text with film and reportage, this production interrogates the way Arab leaders use, possess and perpetuate power. It explores their obstinate blindness in the face of the shifting sands of time and the ambition and aspiration of the people. What is the root of this power? Where does this entitlement stem from?

Shakespeare’s vision of evil and driving ambition finds new resonance amidst a mafia-like culture based on galloping globalisation and the relics of colonial domination. Commissioned for the World Shakespeare Festival.

In Arabic with English surtitles.
