The Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, designed by Michael Reardon, opened in 1986, built inside part of the shell of the Memorial Theatre that survived a fire in 1926.

Based on the design of the playhouses of Elizabethan England, the Swan Theatre is a favourite space for many actors, directors and audiences, owing to its intimate staging and close proximity of the audience to the action. It is the model from which the subsequent Courtyard and new RST thrust stages are derived.
