The Wooster Group
The Wooster Group is a company of artists who make work for theatre, dance, and media. They are based in New York City at The Performing Garage at 33 Wooster Street, where they develop and perform their work. Their productions tour nationally and internationally.

History
The Wooster Group originated in 1975 with works composed and directed by Spalding Gray and Elizabeth LeCompte. The company is constantly evolving, and has created and performed nineteen pieces for theatre, eight film/video pieces, and five dance pieces. The company members are at the centre of the work. Elizabeth LeCompte has directed all of the pieces and members who have "moved on" periodically return to remount repertory pieces and make new work. 

Multimedia
For more than thirty-five years, The Wooster Group has cultivated new forms and techniques of theatrical expression. Wooster Group theatre pieces are constructed as assemblages of juxtaposed elements: radical staging, found materials, films and videos, dance and movement, multi-track scoring, and an architectonic approach to theatre design. The Wooster Group has played a pivotal role in bringing technologically sophisticated and evocative uses of sound, film and video into the realm of contemporary theatre, and in the process has influenced a generation of theatre artists nationally and internationally.

The Performing Garage
The Performing Garage has been The Wooster Group's permanent home and performance venue since its beginning and all of their work has been developed there. It was bought in the early 1970s when Soho was still an empty warehouse district being reinhabited by artists. Before the formation of The Wooster Group, The Performance Group (under the direction of Richard Schechner) developed and produced work at the Garage. From 1975-1980 the two groups shared the space. Prior to The Performance Group founding The Performing Garage, 33 Wooster Street was a metal stamping/flatware factory.

• Directors Elizabeth LeCompte and Mark Ravenhill

Elizabeth LeCompte is director and co-founder of the New York-based Wooster Group. Formed in 1980, the company is well known for its experimental and innovative style. Its most recent works include the Baroque opera La Didone and a version of Tennessee Williams’ Vieux Carré. Mark Ravenhill is the RSC's current Writer in Residence.
